Scan-to-BIM Glossary
Key scan-to-BIM and Revit modeling terms, defined — from LOD and clash detection to federated models and MEP.
Scan-to-BIM terms
BIM (Building Information Modeling)
An intelligent 3D model of a building made of data-rich, object-based elements.
LOD (Level of Development)
How detailed and reliable a BIM element is, from LOD 200 (generalized) to LOD 350 (coordinated).
Revit
Autodesk’s leading BIM software for creating building models.
Family / component
A reusable, parametric BIM object such as a door, window, or fixture.
Clash detection
Automatically finding conflicts between building systems in a coordinated model.
Federated model
A combined model that links separate discipline models (architectural, structural, MEP).
MEP
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Navisworks
Software for reviewing and clash-testing combined BIM models.
LOA (Level of Accuracy)
How closely the model matches the measured point cloud.
Parametric model
A model whose elements are driven by adjustable parameters and rules.
Point cloud
The measured scan data a BIM model is built from.
